MATLAB R2014b and later are fully supported on Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) and 10.11 (El Capitan). We recommend you update to R2014b or later if you are using OS X 10.10 or later. MATLAB R2011a through R2014a may trigger a Java exception and exit on startup on OS X 10.10 and 10.11. Once patched, they appear to work normally, but full compatibility is not guaranteed. The patch can be downloaded from the bug report that can be accessed from the link below: Launching MATLAB on some versions of Mac OS X 10.10 or 10.11 may also display the following error message in a dialog: 'You can't use this version of the application'. This issue can be resolved by following the steps in the Bug Report linked below: MATLAB releases R2008b through R2010b should work on Mac OS X without a patch. However you will need to install and to run these releases on 10.10 or 10.11. To our knowledge, MATLAB R2008a and earlier will not run on Mac OS X 10.10 and 10.11. Is MATLAB compatible with Mac OS X 10.10. I can't download the patch for 2013a. Since making the upgrade to Yosemite Matlab has been very slow. You may be able to get this configuration to work with by installing and, but generally these releases will not run on these operating systems. For more information, please refer to the platform roadmap. For those of you still struggling with getting the R2012a Student Version working, the following steps worked for me. The error I received is triggered by a missing library reference in usr/X11. After installing Yosemite, this library was moved to the directory opt/X11. Step 1: Create a softlink to this library by opening terminal and entering sudo ln -s /opt/X11/ /usr/X11 Step 2: Attempt to open Matlab. This will ask you to update your Java Runtime Environment. Download and install the update from the link provided by Apple. It should be this url. After that, you should be good to go. Hope this helps! For those having the same problem with 10.10 beta 5 & Matlab R2014a. You can fix the problem with the following bash script: #!/bin/sh # Fool the system into believing you are using Mavericks by replacing # the version 10.10 to 10.90, you obviously need sudo to do this. Sudo vim -c '%s/10.10/10.90/ge' -c 'w!' -c 'q' '/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist' # Launch Matlab via the executable /Applications/MATLAB_R2014a.app/bin/matlab # Revert the version change in the SystemVersion.plist file sudo vim -c '%s/10.90/10.10/ge' -c 'w!' -c 'q' '/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist' Then all there is to do put this script in the PATH somewhere and call it from the command line to use Matlab in 10.10:).
